Natural attenuation of chlorinated ethene compounds: model development and field-scale application at the Dover site

چکیده
A multi-dimensional and multi-species reactive transport model was developed to aid in the analysis of natural attenuation design at chlorinated solvent sites. The model can simulate several simultaneously occurring attenuation processes including aerobic and anaerobic biological degradation processes. The developed model was applied to analyze field-scale transport and biodegradation processes occurring at the Area-6 site in Dover Air Force Base, Delaware. The model was calibrated to field data collected at this site. The calibrated model reproduced the general groundwater flow patterns, and also, it successfully recreated the observed distribution of Ž . Ž . Ž . Ž . tetrachloroethene PCE , trichloroethene TCE , dichloroethylene DCE , vinyl chloride VC and chloride plumes. Field-scale decay rates of these contaminant plumes were also estimated. The decay rates are within the range of values that were previously estimated based on lab-scale microcosm and field-scale transect analyses. Model simulation results indicated that the anaerobic degradation rate of TCE, source loading rate, and groundwater transport rate are the important model parameters. Sensitivity analysis of the model indicated that the shape and extent of the predicted TCE plume is most sensitive to transmissivity values. The total mass of the predicted TCE plume is most sensitive to TCE anaerobic degradation rates. The numerical model developed in this study is a useful engineering tool for integrating field-scale natural attenuation data within a rational modeling framework. The model results can be used for quantifying the relative ) Corresponding author. Ž . E-mail address: [email protected] T.P. A case study for demonstrating the application of U.S. EPA's monitored natural attenuation screening protocol at a hazardous waste site.
Natural attenuation assessment data, collected at a Superfund site located in Louisiana, USA, are presented. The study site is contaminated with large quantities of DNAPL waste products. Source characterization data indicated that chlorinated ethene and ethane compounds are the major contaminants of concern. This case study illustrates the steps involved in implementing the U.S. EPA's [U.S. EPA...

A polyphasic approach based on cultivation and direct recovery of 16S rRNA gene sequences was utilized for microbial characterization of an aquifer contaminated with chlorinated ethenes. This work was conducted in order to support the evaluation of natural attenuation of chlorinated ethenes in groundwater at Area 6 at Dover Air Force Base (Dover, DE). Results from these studies demonstrated the...
متن کاملUse of stable isotope analyses to assess natural attenuation of chlorinated ethenes in groundwater
Chlorinated ethenes are among the most frequently detected groundwater contaminants in industrially developed countries. Although their degradation pathways have been understood, assessing the progress of natural attenuation of chlorinated ethenes still remains a challenge. Chlorinated ethenes undergo sequential reductive dechlorination under anoxic conditions; hence, the presence of less chlor...
متن کاملAssessment of degradation pathways in an aquifer with mixed chlorinated hydrocarbon contamination using stable isotope analysis.
The demonstration of monitored natural attenuation (MNA) of chlorinated hydrocarbons in groundwater is typically conducted through the evaluation of concentration trends and parent-daughter product relationships along prevailing groundwater flow paths. Unfortunately, at sites contaminated by mixtures of chlorinated ethenes, ethanes, and methanes, the evaluation of MNA by using solely concentrat...
متن کاملAbiotic and Biotic Pathways in Chlorinated Solvent Natural Attenuation
Abiotic degradative pathways are often overlooked when evaluating natural attenuation at chlorinated solvent sites. Yet, at many sites, significant degradation of parent compounds such as 1,1,1-TCA, PCE and TCE is observed without the corresponding accumulation of daughter products, a sure indication of abiotic reactions. The problems in integrating abiotic processes into MNA are how to prove t...
